About Porcupine Gorge National Park

Porcupine Gorge National Park is located in North Queensland, approximately 150 kilometers northwest of Charters Towers. The park centers around the Porcupine Gorge, a deep and colorful sandstone canyon carved by Porcupine Creek over millions of years. The gorge extends for about 10 kilometers, with cliffs reaching up to 100 meters high in places. This rugged landscape is a striking contrast to the surrounding savannah plains, providing a fascinating natural landmark renowned for its geological formations and scenic vistas. The park supports diverse ecosystems including woodland, dry rainforest patches, and riparian habitats along the creek. Wildlife such as freshwater crocodiles, wallabies, bats, and numerous bird species inhabit the area. Established in 1970, Porcupine Gorge offers several hiking trails that allow visitors to explore its dramatic cliffs and lush creek areas. Prominent trails include the loop track around the gorge rim and the more rugged descent into the valley floor. The park is also popular for camping, picnicking, and bird watching. Its remote location and quiet atmosphere attract those seeking solitude and an authentic outback experience. The park’s cultural history is tied to the local Indigenous peoples, who have longstanding connections to this land. Visitor appeal is enhanced by facilities such as walking tracks, lookouts, and a campground with basic amenities. Porcupine Gorge is a striking natural wonder that showcases Queensland’s ancient geology and diverse wildlife, making it a memorable destination for outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers.
